Why I bought a house on Corfu – Greece
Getting to know Greece
I was traveling my first trip to Greece in 1993. The trip was made with my mentors in Photography, Inger and Reijo Rüster. Reijo was a well known photograper in Sweden, who made several books. Mostly about the Swedish arcipalago. But one book was very special, the book about the ancient marine Greece.
Reijo was working with this book for a period over 30 years. Travelling Greece and digging out old stories and myths.
As I got to know Reijo and almost become like a son to his wife, Inger; who also was a photograper; they took me along to Greece many times. We traveled to Crete, to all corners of Peloponnesos, many times to Kytira. We traveled to Preveza, Parga, Ithaka, and the beautiful Island of Corfu. Also Idra, Piareus and Athens of course.
The book was really about meeting Greece and the Greek people. An excuse to ask questions and make people interested in telling their stories. Reijo made the book´s layout; waited for the different authors, when he passed away in Cancer. The book was about a journey in life; not a finished result.
I was in my 20´s, and I stayed on alone for an extra week on Crete. I had a copy of the book “Greek Island Hopping” by Dana Facaros in my hand and read about the Island. You need something to hold on to, a starting point from where you can start to explore. That is one of the reasons I will make this webpage, to give you a handle to grip on to, for your Corfu adventures.
You need something to hold on to, a starting point from where you can start to explore.
I found out through this book, about an old church in the mountains, which had a tree over it instead of a roof. I went there and my story and love for Greece deepened. Later, I will give you the full story and pictures. It was later published in the paper from the “Swedish institute Friends of Greece”.
During our travels, we tried to learn some greek words, and even had a teacher comming to out photostudio in Old Town, Stockholm. I know maby only 50 words, but it helps and I want to learn much more.
I should make a separate page, listing the greek words I know, and also the ones I am trying to learn. Lets put a link here
